My little boy is growing up way too fast for my liking. Yesterday a lady from our church who works in the nursery area saw Elliott for the first time in a few years and just commented on how big he was getting. Then she told me that I should soak this time in because he is at the age where he will be enjoying my companionship (which I guess also means there will be a time where he won’t, but that’s for another day).
It’s funny she said that because that’s exactly what’s been happening. Elliott seems to be a little more aware when I’m gone and a little more eager to have me home so we can spend time together. I remember doing that with my Dad too. Let me just say, as a Dad, I couldn’t feel any more proud that my son wants to be near me and just hang out. What a great feeling.
Then it hit me, the same is true for our Heavenly Father. He delights when we desire to draw near to Him. He is proud when we seek him and when we want to spend time with him. That is worship; to desire and spend time in his presence. It seems easy for a child to wait eagerly for a Dad to come home, so he can run and jump into his arms and to tell him all about his day; It’s somewhat natural. But as adult Christians, the desire is still there, but the time usually isn’t. Maybe I’m beginning to understand why Jesus tells us to have faith of a child.
